While the band still manages to concoct high-end tracks, studio albums lack balance and often turn out to be uneven. You have to go back to the excellent Bloodshot in 1973 to see the Band caracolate in the American charts. It is on stage that the band gives the best of itself. Let’s be honest, if the band still enjoys a strong reputation, it is through its concerts, often exceptional. This is the last record of the sextet published by Atlantic. J GEILS BAND’s seventh studio album, Monkey Island, released in June 1977, marked the end of an era for theīand. This visual is unattractive and hardly attractive, coupled with the fact that only the guitarist’s name is listed, has been highly damaging commercially. The Monkey Island cover can be confusing: indeed, it is simply the name of GEILS that appears on the black and white cover. The rest of the album is ok, but for me, anybody who can make a marine band sound like Louis Armstrong is worth listening to and appreciating…. They’re all excellent in their own right, but not any of them can match this tone on this one song. I’m including players like Kim Wilson, Rod Piazza, Mark Hummel, Rick Estrin, etc.

This sound has never been duplicated on record (that I’m aware of) and is beyond even the very best players’ abilities as far as tone goes. The harmonica sounds more like a trumpet than a marine band. Magic Dick creates a tone approaching Louis Armstrong’s trumpet. Listen carefully to the song “I’m not Rough”. This album is a must have for one reason. I’ve been a fan of J.Geils and a musician (harmonica, guitar, tenor sax) for 30 years. It’s not just frenetic energy, there’s some real heart in “Monkey Island.”….Mr. Comparison to the Rolling Stones (if useful at all?) is not apt for this album – it trends more toward The Doors ('Strange Days’ variety). The instruments do not overwhelm the songs, the musicianship is playful and skillful. “Wreckage” is another great song: all my favorites here are moody and subdued. If that’s you, this may not be the album for you. Overall, my impression is that Geils fans prefer the rambunctious and rowdy. I’m surprised other reviewers don’t mention “You’re the only one.” It got airplay back in the 70’s but I haven’t seen it (nor the title track) on any Geils ‘greatest hits’ collections so I guess I’m alone in my preferences. No, “Monkey Island” is not the best song ever made…but it’s really good, surprisingly good at 9 minutes-plus and this CD is worth buying just for this song.
